In the 1850s under the constitutions of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, Aboriginal men had the same right to vote as other male British subjects aged over 21. In 1896 State of Tasmania granted Aboriginal men same rights.
In 1895 South Australia became the first electorate in the world to give equal political rights to both women and men. Aboriginal women shared these rights.
The first federal electoral Act, the Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902, granted men and women of all states the right to vote. Some Indigenous people were excluded from this right unless they already had the right to vote before 1901.
In March 1949 Prime Minister Ben Chifley introduced an amendment to the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. This extended the right to vote in federal elections to all Indigenous person who serve the country or had been a member of the defence forces. As many were nomadic tribes, some are not ready to come in contact with law makers or government.
The federal government passed the 1962 Act, Western Australia and the Northern Territory granted Aboriginal people the right to vote. Towards the end of 1965 the Queensland parliament passed an Act to extend voting rights to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It was not until 1984 that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gained full equality with other electors under the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Act 1983. This Act made enrolling to vote at federal elections compulsory for Indigenous Australians.
Even Laws and Amendment made in 1949 to constitution as well as Electoral Act majority aboriginals refused to come under one law, or laws of Australia and refused to enroll to vote. they wanted to get funding crying victims, they were thinking if enrolled they will lose all freebies. Australian government made enough attempt and in 1983 they made law of compulsory enrollment to all.
All Aboriginals has full voting rights, they can contest, appoint their own representative to have their voice to parliament.
