Australia was not “discovered” in the traditional sense, that’s how aboriginals and vested interest groups trying to deny discovery of Australia, to modern world saying as it was already inhabited by Indigenous Australians for tens of thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers. The Indigenous people had lived in Australia for over 65,000 years, with a diverse and rich history of cultures and societies.(few years back it was 40,000 if you listen to some old songs, in few years it will be million years no doubt)
However, from the perspective of European exploration, Australia was “discovered” by the Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon in 1606. He was the first recorded European to make contact with the Australian continent when he landed on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, which is now part of the state of Queensland.
Later, in 1770, the British explorer Captain James Cook charted the eastern coastline of Australia and claimed it for Britain, leading to the establishment of the first British penal colony at Sydney Cove in 1788.
It’s essential to acknowledge the ancient and ongoing connection of Indigenous Australians to the land and their rich cultural heritage that predates European contact. Today, Australia recognizes the significance of its Indigenous history and seeks to promote reconciliation and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
